OSHA 1926.51(c) governs sanitation on construction sites. It's short, specific, and Phoenix general contractors are inspected against it regularly. Here's the plain-English version.
The count requirement.
1 toilet for 20 or fewer employees. 1 toilet and 1 urinal per 40 workers for 20+. 1 toilet and 1 urinal per 40 additional workers beyond 200.
The service requirement.
OSHA doesn't spell out a pump schedule — but it does require units be maintained in a 'clean and sanitary condition.' In Phoenix summer that means weekly service at minimum, twice-weekly for large crews.
Monsoon anchoring.
Between June and September, unanchored units get blown over in Arizona haboobs. We install strap-and-stake anchor kits at no charge on request — you should ask for them.
Handwashing.
OSHA 1926.51(f)(3) requires potable water and handwashing on any site where employees handle blood, food, or contaminants. In practice, most Phoenix GCs pair porta potties with a portable handwashing station regardless.
